“Purpose. The aims of this study were (i) to develop a new portable slit-lamp mounted digital meniscometer (PDM) and (ii) to test its see more accuracy and

We developed a novel application for an iPod or iPhone, which created an illuminated target of parallel black and white bands. This was used as a portable device with which to perform reflective meniscometry. The medians of three consecutive measurements on five glass capillaries (internal radii, 0.100 to 0.505 mm) were compared between VM and PDM at two different sessions. Also, the central lower tear meniscus radius (TMR) in 20 normal subjects (10 males and 10 females; mean [SD] age, 32.3 [9.3] years) was measured using both techniques. Correlations between the instruments were analyzed using the Pearson coefficient.

Data on demographics and awareness of glaucoma were collected through face-to-face interview using a pretested structured questionnaire. Participants who have heard about glaucoma were considered as aware and those giving an agreeable definition were considered as having knowledge on glaucoma. Results: A total of 348 subjects participated in this study. The mean age of the participants was 48.3 +/- 12.0 years. The majority of them were females, residents of rural areas, and literates. Among the total participants, 211 (60.6%) were aware of the term glaucoma. Only 19 (5.5%) of the total participants had some knowledge of glaucoma. The awareness on glaucoma was significantly associated with higher level of education, family history of glaucoma, and previous history of eye check up.

Conclusions: Knowledge of glaucoma in this population is very low. No particular groups of people are aware of glaucoma in this part of the country. Health education should be broadly targeted at the population to educate people about the risk factors of glaucoma and thereby prevent needless blindness.”

Spatial variation in sea surface temperatures was correlated with the volume transport of ocean currents, indicating that temperature and flow fields affected chub mackerel distribution both directly and indirectly. We also found that long-term fluctuations in climate were associated with chub mackerel hotspots, suggesting that atmosphere-ocean interactions may drive chub mackerel distribution variability. MPV values were determined for all study participants. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and clock drawing tests (CDT) were performed for cognitive assessment, DSM-IV and NINCDS-ADRDA criteria were used for diagnosis of AD. The mean MPV values were significantly higher in AD group (8.46 +/- 1.15 vs. 8.17 +/- 0.90; p = 0.011). In this study, significantly higher MPV values in patients with AD have been detected. Since increased MPV levels are usually considered as a vascular risk factor, the results of this study suggested the role of platelet activation in the vascular pathogenetic basis of AD. “Objective: Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of GABA degradation leading to elevations in brain GABA and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). The effect of chronically elevated GABA and GHB on cortical excitability is unknown. We hypothesized that use-dependent downregulation of GABA receptor expression would promote cortical disinhibition rather than inhibition, predominantly via presynaptic GABAergic mechanisms.
